Kauai-Perfect Island Getaway
by S. Bolton
My family and I have traveled to the island of Kauai, Hawaii, several times under different circumstances but across the board I can say I would recommend this destination to ANYONE who can get together the funds to take such a trip. My family is not wealthy and this is not just a "rich people" vacation as I thought for a long time (although it is also not one you want to take on a complete shoestring budget). It is perfect as a romantic getaway, my husband and I took our honeymoon there and there are plenty of couple's activities including walks, beachcombing, snorkeling, and a sunset cruise up the Na Pali coast (we used Blue Dolphin Charters). There is also family friendly stuff, using the same cruise company we took a tour of the Na Pali coast on another trip with my 6 year old son and my mother. There are the Wyland galleries which have beautiful art, and the Kauai Children's Museum. Some good "baby beaches" that are protected and great for doing with kids include Poipu Beach and Salt Pond. Some good eating establishments that don't take a bank loan include Brennecke's Beach Broiler, and Wahooo's. For mid-range dining and a great train ride (using the train ridden by Hawaiian Kings) try Gaylord's Plantation. And for a meal that's a splurge, Roy's is unbeatable. For lodging, from Suite Paradise for a 2 bedroom condo, to Kauai Palms hotel for a range of hotel rooms, you can find something that works. I would highly recommend Kauai also just because you can have so much fun without spending extra money, just by walking and driving around and checking out the beaches. You MUST try it if you can. |
