Lake Tahoe vacations are a favorite weekend getaway and family vacation destination for Californians.

The weather in Lake Tahoe California is wonderful year round. It's moderate climate make it a favorite year-round destination for California vacations. The average summer high is 79 degrees and low is 40 degrees (great sleeping weather!). In the winter the average high is in the low to mid 40s (perfect for skiing!) and the low is in the mid to upper teens.

• Drive the loop around the lake during your Lake Tahoe vacation. This has been called the most beautiful drive in America and takes about 2 1/2 hours plus stops. From South Lake Tahoe take Route 28 north to Route 89 South to US 50.

Alpine Slopes covered with knee-deep powder and gorgeous views make Tahoe skiing world famous and a very popular ski destination. There are 15 ski resorts in the area. The North Shore has the most downhill ski resorts including the popular Squaw Valley and family friendly Northstar at Tahoe. South Lake Tahoe's Heavenly is also a big favorite of skiiers.

Cross Country Skiing is a favorite activity for Lake Tahoe vacations with great snow and beautiful forest trails. Spooner Lake has 57 miles of groomed trails and Tahoe X-C has 40 miles of trails for all abilities.

• Mount Rose is one of the tallest mountains with a great 12 mile round trip climb and panoramic view at the top
• Granite Chief Wilderness is west of Squaw Valley and is a great outdoor destination of hiking trails and mountains streams
